Recently, the CDC reported that there were an estimated 100,306 drug overdose deaths in the US between April 2020-2021. This is an almost 30% increase. This is also the highest number of overdose deaths in recorded history.
Opioids, particularly the synthetic opioid Fentanyl, were the main contributor to these statistics as overdose deaths from opioids increased to 75,673 in the 12-month period ending in April 2021. The 12 months prior to this had recorded an estimated 56,064 deaths. Synthetic opioids (primarily fentanyl) and psychostimulants (methamphetamine) also increased in the 12-month period ending in April 2021. Cocaine deaths also increased, as did deaths from natural and semi-synthetic opioids (such as prescription pain medication).
Locally, Fentanyl is the reason for at least 60% of the calls we get. It is cheap, potent, and wickedly addictive in that the withdrawals are awful. We provide Narcan, however, there are some forms of Fentanyl that are Narcan-resistant. These statistics should be a wake-up call for anyone concerned they or a loved one has an opioid addiction. You don’t have to live this way or worse, become another statistic.
