Brain Training (Neurofeedback) is a non-invasive treatment that encourages the brain to develop healthier patterns of activity. Before starting this treatment, a Quantitative Electroencephalogram (Q-EEG) device is used to create a “brain map”. It measures how fast and how high & low brain your waves travel. When dysregulated brain waves in different areas are identified, it may indicate the presence of psychiatric symptoms related to:
- Attention
- Anxiety
- Depression
- PTSD
- Mood
- Memory
- Addictive behavior
Once dysregulated areas are identified, specific “brain training” sessions are conducted that target those areas. These sessions can be done at the office or at home, with some special equipment. The goal of treatment is not only to change how you think and feel but also to change your brain activity on a biological level. This is a non-invasive, non-medication treatment to help our brain waves communicate and function properly.
There are numerous studies that support its clinical use. Some researchers have cautioned that the current evidence is insufficient to make conclusive claims; however, Stanford University, as well as other academic institutions, consider the evidence behind neurofeedback promising enough to start their own clinical trials. As the field advances, we should have more studies that help us better understand how neurofeedback improves brain function. Just like medications, not everyone will respond to the treatment, but I have seen the benefits it may provide.
Treatment will be conducted at Vero Beach Recovery Center and to read more about the treatment, please go to BrainCore. If you would like to get more information about Brain Training or to see if it is an option for you please call (772) 584-3083.
