Because many people are looking for a science-based approach to recovery and do not identify as spiritual or religious, 12-step programs may not feel like the right method of treatment. As a result, we provide other evidence-based techniques to encourage long-term motivation for recovery.
One option is SMART Recovery, a globally recognized program with a strong foundation of scientific evidence and tools to help offer support in addiction recovery. Unlike AA, which follows a 12-step program, SMART recovery is based on a four-point system that is supplemented by tools and techniques to assist in overcoming all addictions. SMART Recovery focuses on self-empowerment and through the SMART Recovery 4-Step Program participants can learn:
1. Building and maintaining motivation
2. Coping with urges
3. Managing thoughts, feelings, and behaviors
4. Living a balanced life
