Neurofeedback (EEG Biofeedback) is based upon clinical studies that date back to the 1970s and has resulted in a cutting-edge method of teaching the brain to function in a more balanced and
“normal” way. Neurofeedback is also referred to as Brain Mapping and Brain Training and is safe for all ages, is drug-free, and non-invasive. This cutting-edge treatment modality produces neural pathway stimulation and reorganization normally associated with Neuroplasticity and is a learning modality that can help shift the way the brain produces and distributes its electrical impulses measured by the Delta, Theta, Alpha, and Beta Frequency bands.
How it works
This is a non-invasive treatment that encourages the brain to develop healthier patterns of activity. Before starting treatment, an EEG device is used to create a “brain map”. It measures how fast and how high & low brain your waves travel. When dysregulated brain waves in different areas are identified, it may indicate the presence of psychiatric symptoms related to attention, anxiety, mood, memory, and/or addictive behavior. Once dysregulated areas are identified, specific “brain training” sessions are conducted that target those areas. These sessions can be done at the office or at home, with some special equipment. The goal of treatment is not only to change how you think and feel but also to change your brain activity on a biological level. This is a non-invasive, non-medication treatment to help our brain waves communicate and function properly.
First Step:
The first step is a thirty-minute procedure (Brain Mapping) where a certified clinical staff member uses the Quantitative Electroencephalogram (QEEG) to map the brain.
Step Two:
Following this step, we can analyze the QEEG data to determine where there is dysregulation. Specific areas of dysregulation are associated with specific conditions like Anxiety, Depression, Substance Abuse, PTSD, ADHD, Cognitive Impairment, Dementia, and others. When moving to Brain Training, we “train” those specific areas, we focus on regulating the brain activity that causes those abnormal symptoms. This training occurs on a subconscious level and is done using movies, games, or music. Typical minimum number of treatments range from 40-60 and can be higher due to the metabolic health of the client.
Not everyone is a candidate for Neurofeedback and for some individuals with Metabolic issues, Neurofeedback may take more sessions. With very few adverse effects, we stress that this is a treatment that is best done while in continued therapy or a treatment program as Brain Training can elicit traumatic and repressed memories that may need to be processed with a therapist.
