Understanding Addiction Treatment: What It Really Means
If you’re concerned about your own or a loved one’s substance use, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed and unsure where to begin. Many people assume that attending Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), or a peer group like SMART Recovery is the same as getting treatment.
While these support groups are valuable, they are not the same as clinical substance abuse treatment. Knowing the difference—and how both can work together—can be a powerful turning point in recovery.
What Is “Treatment”?
Addiction treatment is a structured, evidence-based process led by licensed professionals. It’s designed to address both substance use and any mental health conditions that may be contributing to the problem. This combination is known as a Dual Diagnosis.
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), more than 60% of people with a substance use disorder also live with mental health conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or bipolar disorder.
Effective treatment doesn’t just help people stop using—it helps them understand why they started, how it became harmful, and what steps are needed to create lasting change.
The Continuum of Care (the Treatment Continuum)
Treatment is not one-size-fits-all. It often follows a continuum of care, which may include:
- Medical Detox – For safe and supervised withdrawal
- Residential/Inpatient Treatment – 24/7 structured care
- Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) – Intensive daytime treatment
- Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) – Therapy multiple times a week
- Outpatient Treatment (OP) – Ongoing support with more flexibility
What Treatment Is Not
While helpful in recovery, the following do not qualify as formal clinical treatment:
- Sober living homes or recovery residences
- Support groups like AA, NA, or SMART Recovery
- One-on-one therapy alone without a treatment plan
Each level of care in treatment provides increasing flexibility while maintaining structure and accountability. For example, our IOP at Vero Beach Recovery Center runs evenings (6–9 p.m.) and some mornings (10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday). This allows clients to keep working while receiving quality care and support.
This structure—combined with drug testing, therapy, and regular assessments—offers support that mutual-help groups simply cannot provide on their own.
Support Groups vs. Treatment
AA, NA, and SMART Recovery offer essential peer-led support and community. However, these groups do not replace professional treatment. They do not address complex mental health needs, nor are they staffed by licensed clinicians.
Support groups work best when paired with formal treatment. Clinical programs include:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- EMDR (used for trauma)
- Motivational Interviewing
- Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
These approaches are evidence-based, proven to reduce relapse, and help patients achieve better long-term outcomes.
Why Treatment Works
Treatment creates a structured, supportive environment where people can safely explore deeper issues behind their substance use. At Vero Beach Recovery Center, we follow an integrated Dual Diagnosis model. That means we treat both addiction and any underlying mental health conditions—such as trauma, anxiety, or depression.
Recovery isn’t just about stopping substances. It’s about building a healthier, more fulfilling life.
Not Sure Where to Start?
A great first step is a confidential Substance Abuse Assessment. It’s a low-pressure way to explore your concerns or help someone else, without committing to a program right away.
An assessment helps you:
- Understand what’s going on
- Find the right level of care
- Learn whether formal treatment is the next best step
Many people say this was the least intimidating way to begin—and the most helpful.
